Truck Driver Training

In the absence of sufficient practical experience, which is the case for all entry level truck drivers, employers may accept evidence of a truck driver’s successful completion of qualifying accredited training. Courses which have been accredited by the Professional Truck Driving Institute of America are recognized by both the trucking industry and the US government.

However, due to many factors, including substandard curricula, insufficient classroom training, inadequate behind the wheel time training, and unqualified instructors, many non PTDI programs do not meet industry’s minimum standards for truck driver training in lieu of necessary practical experience.

When considering enrolment in a truck driver training course, it is important to understand that not all truck driver training programs are the same.

This uneven approach to truck driver training is due largely to the fact that no uniform federal , state or provincial accreditation standards currently exist to regulate truck driver training schools. In the absence of common truck driver training standards, industry recommends that prospective students receive written confirmation from the truck driver training school in question that the specific course being considered is currently accredited to meet the minimum truck driver training standards of the PTDI.

Many companies develop their own qualified trained truck drivers and take recent truck driving training school grads and work with them until they are fully trained and ready to go out on their own. The supervised work experience should be more of a transition phase from school to the real world. Then the next step for the carrier would be to team the truck driver trainee with a regular fleet truck driver for up to 3 months. After a series of evaluations by the regular truck drivers and the trainers, if all goes well, the carrier has a fully qualified trained home-grown truck driver.
