Hiring Truck Drivers

Hiring the right people is the most important factor for a carrier. All carriers face two problems when hiring truck drivers and that is to hire the right person and to avoid hiring the wrong
person.

When hiring truck drivers, every applicant’s job related skill level and fitness for work should be tested in an objective and standardized manner. Also when hiring truck drivers, carrier’s need all the information they can get for a good hiring decision. This can be accomplished by having a well designed application form which requires information to assess the applicant’s qualifications. The application should be completed at the carrier’s office so that literacy problems cannot be hidden by the applicant taking the application away and have someone else complete the form for them.

When hiring truck drivers background checks must be carried out thoroughly.  In the U.S. carriers are required to record an applicant’s employment history for the previous ten years and verify a truck driver’s employment history for the past three years. If carrier’s do not release required information, you can log calls and keep fax confirmations in the new hire truck driver’s file to demonstrate due diligence. When acquiring reference information, a list of required information should be obtained which includes accident history, if there were accidents determine if they were preventable or non preventable. Compare the truck driver’s abstract with reference information and determine if the applicant’s declaration of violations is accurate and honest. Disciplinary actions, on time delivery, reliability and attitude are important facts for the carrier gathering information on their potential candidate when hiring truck drivers.

Truck drivers get their first impression of the carrier by the age and type of equipment the company runs. Clean and well-maintained units convey a message of stability and order. The new hire truck driver will also get an impression from the first live contact with the company. Is the company representative courteous, professional, prompt and knowledgeable, or does he come across like a used car salesman? Are the promises being made over the phone kept or are they ploys to get the new hire truck driver in the door and signed up?
